Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some frequently asked questions about counselling. If you have any questions that are not listed here please contact me at yeatestreeoflife@outlook.com or on 07983113702 to arrange an introductory phone call.

How often do I have counselling and how long do counselling sessions last?

Adult counselling sessions last 60 minutes and children sessions last 45 minutes. Children's sessions are shorter as they may find a longer session quite difficult initially due to factors including an unfamiliar environment and the child's development. Sessions are usually weekly for the first six weeks then sessions can be reviewed depending on your counselling needs.

What Happens in my Counselling Sessions?

After your enquiry I will contact you to arrange an initial free 15 minute phone conversation where we can discuss your counselling goals and expectations. I will then ask you to attend a low cost 30 minute consultation to see if I am the right counsellor for you, answer any questions you may have, look at contracts and any policies and procedures and arrange days and times that suit for our weekly counselling sessions. Counselling is your time to discuss anything that comes up for you. We will discuss what you bring to sessions or we may continue a topic of discussion from a previous session.

What you bring depends on what you feel is right, clients can bring feelings, thoughts and behaviours which are relevant to the past and present.

Are Sessions Confidential?

Counselling sessions are confidential so what you bring to counselling stays between us. There are some exceptions to confidentiality. I am a member of The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society and follow the Code of Ethics available on their website. www.ncps.com.

All counsellors have a supervisor who is there to support the counsellor to ensure they have the clients best interests in mind when making decisions. Anything that is relayed to the supervisor is done anonymously.

I also have a duty of care to ensure my clients are safe so if I am worried about the safety of a client I may have to discuss this with another professional such as a GP, or follow my policies and procedures in regards to safeguarding, especially where children are concerned. I also have a legal duty to report crimes related to acts of terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering and harm to another person.

How Long will Counselling Last?

I offer short term and long term therapy. This means there is no limit on the amount of sessions available and I am client led so work on an individual basis. I offer weekly sessions for 6 weeks then review the sessions to see what the client may need after.

What Happens If I Cannot make a Session?

I ask that where possible clients cancel or reschedule an appointment 24 hours in advance. If this is not possible then the session will still be charged for.

How Can I pay For Sessions?

I am currently only taking BACS (Bank Transfer) payments. If this is a difficulty then please let me know and we can come to an arrangement.
